Receive an Offer to Register a Trademark?

We wanted to alert you to an email scam offering to register a trademark for you that some of our clients have reported to us. This is not reserved for companies that have existing trademarks. In fact, the clients that have been contacted so far do not have registered trademarks.Image of registered trademark scam

If you receive an email from a person purporting to be an attorney with a firm using a name like Trademark Troop, Trademark Precision, Trademark Swift, or Trademark Zenesa, and offering to register a trademark for you, it is likely a scam.

Purports to “Protect” Your Company’s Name

Scammers will

  • offer to register a trademark
  • say it’s to prevent others from trademarking your name
  • send follow up emails if you do not respond
  • threaten it’s your last chance

The email will alert you to an alleged client of theirs who is attempting to register a trademark that is either exactly or very similar to your company’s name. They will then offer to register a trademark for you in order to prevent that other client from registering the trademark before you do. They will also send follow-up emails if you do not respond saying something like this is your last chance before the other client applies for the trademark that is using your company name.

Please disregard these emails, and do not provide them with your credit card information. They do not have an existing client who is going to register a trademark in your name, and they will not file a trademark for you.

If you have any questions about whether you should register a trademark or what your rights are to your existing intellectual property, please contact Ashley Bolduc (abolduc@cwlawyers.com).
