Our Healthcare Lawyers

Our exceptional team of healthcare attorneys is led by partner Karen Taillon, P.C., a Martindale Hubbell “AV”-rated attorney who is Certified in Healthcare Compliance (CHC) by the Health Care Compliance Association and is a trained arbitrator by the American Health Lawyers Association.

As a trial lawyer, Ms. Taillon has successfully represented numerous health care providers in managed care contracting and related litigation involving PacifiCare, Monarch Healthcare, Kaiser Permanente, and Great-West Insurance, among others.  She was successful in obtaining a $3.9 million binding arbitration award against Blue Shield of California. For eight years Ms. Taillon was co-liaison defense counsel by court appointment, representing one of the three physicians in the UCI complex litigation “fertility cases” and related civil and administrative actions. She has represented numerous physicians at the University of California on faculty and research-related issues.

Melanie Balestra, partner and licensed pediatric nurse practitioner (PNP), focuses on issues that affect healthcare providers.  She represents clients in administrative law hearings regarding licensing issues and disciplinary matters in California and Arizona.  She also represents healthcare providers in disputes with Medi-Cal and Medi-Care.

Additionally, Ms. Balestra is instrumental in helping clients set up new practices in a variety of areas, including family practice, aesthetic medicine and other specialty areas.  Her expertise as a practicing provider (PNP) gives her unique insight into the healthcare field and the laws that govern it.

Our healthcare lawyers consider themselves strategic partners with our clients, ensuring continued success and compliance with the law, particularly as the healthcare industry changes in response to competitive marketplace forces, new payor arrangements, and governmental regulation. We integrate the strengths of a 17-attorney firm and draw upon the knowledge of lawyers in other practice groups, including corporate transaction, real estate, labor and employment, trusts and estates, and corporate litigation. As a result, the healthcare practice group offers sound and creative solutions, and our breadth of practice and experience distinguishes us from other law firms.
