Karen L. Taillon joined Cummins & White's Newport Office as a contract partner in 1993. As a trial lawyer, Ms. Taillon represents primarily health care providers (hospitals and physicians) in issues relating to the healthcare industry, including contract law, real estate transactions and litigation, general business, and employment law. Formerly, she was Corporate Vice President and General Counsel for United Western Medical Centers, a multi-facility health system in Orange County, and currently acts as General Counsel for Hoag Memorial Hospital Presbyterian. Ms. Taillon enjoys Martindale-Hubbell Law Directory's highest "AV" rating for lawyers.
For eight years Ms. Taillon was co-liaison defense counsel by court appointment, representing one of the three physicians in the University of California at Irvine "fertility cases" and related civil and administrative actions. In addition to the "fertility cases," she has represented numerous physicians at the University of California on faculty and research related issues. Ms. Taillon has successfully represented several health care providers in contract/business litigation involving, among others, PacifiCare of California, Monarch Healthcare, and Kaiser Permanente, and obtained a $3.9 million binding arbitration award against Blue Shield of California.
Ms. Taillon is a member of the State Bar of California. She is admitted to practice before the United States Supreme Court, U.S. District Court for the Central District of California, and the U.S. District Court, Western District of Pennsylvania. She was also specially admitted to the Mississippi State Bar to provide pro bono legal services to Katrina victims. She has been a member of the Los Angeles County and Orange County Bar Associations (where she served as a delegate to the California State Bar Conference). Ms. Taillon recently completed a two-year term as President of the Newport Harbor Bar Association and continues on its Board of Directors. She is a member of the California Hospital Association, and American Health Lawyers Association. Ms. Taillon also volunteers as a temporary judge for the Orange County Superior Court.
Ms. Taillon received her Bachelor of Science in Law with high honors through a combined program at California State University at Fullerton and Western State University (1981). She earned her Juris Doctorate magnum cum laude from Western State University (1982), where she was managing editor of the WSU Law Review (1981-1982), and a valedictory candidate upon graduation. During her law school career, Ms. Taillon earned ten American Jurisprudence awards for scholastic achievement, the Corpus Juris Secundum and Foundation Press awards for overall academic achievement, and was named in Who's Who in American Colleges and Universities.
Ms. Taillon and her husband have two grown daughters, and reside in Newport Beach, California.
